Born in Manitoba, Alan Crawley was admitted as a barrister and solicitor to the Bar of Manitoba in 1912. In addition to practising law he was a member of the Community Players of Winnipeg and developed a keen interest in contemporary poetry. James Augustus Aloysius Joyce was born on February 2, 1882, in Rathgar, a borough of Dublin, Ireland, the eldest of ten children who survived infancy. In 1888 he was enrolled at Clongowes Wood College, a Jesuit boarding school near Dublin, where he stayed until 1891. Thereafter he attended Belvedere College, and then University College, Dublin, where he graduated in 1902 with a major in Italian. A. M. Klein was a Canadian poet who was born in the Ukraine of orthodox Jewish parents; he grew up in Montreal and became a lawyer by profession. As a student at McGill he founded a literary magazine and was associated with the "Montreal Group" of poets.
